Election Day in the United States is the legally designated day for general elections of public officials. It falls on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November, ensuring that Election Day can occur between November 2 and November 8. The upcoming election is scheduled for November 5, 2024.

For federal offices, including the President, Vice President, and the U.S. Congress, Election Day takes place in even-numbered years. Presidential elections occur every four years, specifically in years divisible by four. During these elections, electors for the President and Vice President are selected according to each state's specific method. Elections for the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate are held every two years. All Representatives serve two-year terms, meaning the entire House is up for election every two years, while Senators serve six-year terms. However, Senate elections are staggered so that one-third of the Senate is elected during each general election. When the presidency is not on the ballot, these elections are referred to as midterm elections. The terms of those elected in November begin the following January. The President and Vice President are inaugurated on January 20, known as Inauguration Day.

In addition to federal offices, many state and local offices are also filled on Election Day, as a cost-saving and convenient measure. Some states, however, hold elections for state offices, like governor, during odd-numbered years, known as "off years."

Congress has established a uniform date for presidential elections (under 3 U.S.C. § 1) and congressional elections (under 2 U.S.C. § 1 and 2 U.S.C. § 7), though many states allow early voting. States such as Oregon and Washington conduct all elections by mail. In Oregon, ballots must be received by a specific deadline on Election Day, while in Washington, ballots only need to be postmarked by Election Day.

In some states and territories, Election Day is considered a civic holiday. This includes Delaware, Hawaii, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, West Virginia, and Puerto Rico. Additionally, many states require that employees be allowed time off to vote without losing pay. For example, California mandates that workers who cannot vote outside working hours must be given two hours off, either at the start or end of their shift, with pay.

Historically, Election Day was set in November to accommodate the nation's agrarian population. In an era when most Americans were farmers, November was ideal because the harvest was finished, and travel conditions were still mild. Tuesdays were chosen because voters in rural areas often needed to travel long distances to vote, and beginning travel on Sunday would conflict with church services.

The decision to hold the election on the first Tuesday after the first Monday was made for practical reasons. First, lawmakers wanted to avoid Election Day coinciding with November 1, which is All Saints Day, an important religious holiday for Roman Catholics. Second, they sought to avoid the first of the month because many merchants settled their monthly accounts on that day, and Congress feared that economic factors might unfairly influence voters.
